Rick Hart loved the Fremantle Dockers. I met him once or twice. Even after a defeat to the Swans in Sydney he had time for a chat with a disappointed fan.
Steve Harris is something altogether different. He did not come from a sporting background at all. In fact before supporting Fremantle he barracked for the West Coast Eagles.
He has taken away the logo which the club has had since its inception, when I started supporting the Dockers.
He has taken away the four colours, our Port Heritage and uniqueness.
He is going to take away the song.
And now….he is going to move the club from its spiritual base in Fremantle.
He was not there in the hard years when 20, 000 or less fans turned up for one home win in the season.
He was not there in the pouring rain at the WACA where about 10, 000 of us witnessed Fremantle beating Port Adelaide. In fact he has not been there for any of the significant events that have shaped our history. He was certainly not there when about 10,000 fans marched from Fremantle to Subiaco oval to watch us be defeated, yet make the point that the heart of the Dockers is to be found in Fremantle.
And in fact….I wish he was not there now.
I have written on this before, but it probably bears repeating, if only for my sake.
Do you reckon God is like a stoic stiff upper lip Englishman…or a passionate emotional Italian? (to gross generalise nationalities)
My tip is on the emotion filled, expressive, creative Italian. I say that based on the Psalms, on the emotion God shows to His people in the Old Testamanet. On how Jesus was…on the beauty and expression and wonder found in creation.
If there is truth in what I suggest, what does that mean for us as Christians?
The past few months have been a mixed bag for me. But the light at the end is not the oncoming train.
We are almost ready to sell the land our Church owns. That is the end of a long journey. Our Church is absolutely ready for the next move. That is something many could not say, that their church was ready for significant change.
Personally our family is looking forward to some long service leave towards the end of the year. After 18 years of ministry, hard slog at times, joy and laughter at others, it is time to reflect on the next stage of our Church journey. Time to get ready for where God is taking Inglewood Community Church too.
God is good. Feeling myself coming out of a funk, feeling better and better.
